Overview:

Magnetite® is a retro-fit secondary glazing system that converts any single glazed window or door into a double glazed providing all the benefits of traditional double-glazing at a more competitive price and without the hassles of window replacement. Complementary to this is tinting of the primary glazing surface, which is a separate product and is applied only if the window is not well shaded during the summer months. Tinting assists the Magnetite system in reducing heat gain and glare caused by the strong Australian sun, while also enhancing privacy as well as security.

Installation:

Magnetite is installed on the inside of any existing window or door. The system comprises of a framework that can be made to follow the look and décor of the original window as well as secondary glazing made from optical grade acrylic panels. The panels are attached to the framework by magnetic attraction, hence the name ‘Magnetite’. The magnetic seal between the panels and the framework prevents air leaks, which often occur in single glazed windows and are responsible for draughts and transition of noise. This design ensures that panels can be of any size up to 4 m2 as well as shape. The panels are removable and in an advanced version of the system can be made to slide on a rail. Utilizing optical grade acrylic, as opposed to glass, improves the thermal insulation properties of the secondary window by five times. This material is also light and durable assuring effortless handling. Furthermore, as a result of its optical grade qualities it has transparency equal to that of glass, protects from UV rays and does not fade or craze over time. Moreover, the system’s versatility accommodates different thicknesses of this glazing material, ensuring performance as well as cost effectiveness. The two glazing surfaces act as a physical barrier for heat and noise transfers with the air between them as the insulating buffer. Tinting the primary glazing surface assists Magnetite in combating heat gain in summer, by significantly reducing radiant heat, as opposed to the conductive heat that Magnetite fights against.

Tests:

The system was tested by National Acoustic Laboratory for noise reduction and is rated on a Window Energy Rating Scheme by the Australian Window Association. The tests have shown that noise nuisance is decreased on average by an additional 15 dB through the audible frequencies, which converts to up to 70% reduction in noise intensity - noticeably reducing stress whilst rising personal comfort. The system has received a rating of four stars for keeping heat out in summer with tinting or shading and four and a half stars for keeping heat inside during winter. The maximum achievable result is five stars. These values convert to up to 60% increase in thermal efficiency and surpass the current five star energy building requirement for windows - noticeably cutting energy bills and controlling temperatures.

Pricing:

The standard pricing of the Magnetite Secondary Glazing System ranges from $350 to $450 per square meter fully supplied and installed. The type and size as well as features of a window or door including number of panes and nature of the casement affect the price. The bigger the glazing area and the fewer number of panes the price will generally be lower while small or multi paned windows will have a higher price per square meter. As a guide, the cost of insulating for thermal efficiency and noise reduction concentrated at medium to high frequencies (general traffic, dogs, people, air conditioners and most music) will be around $350 to $400 per square meter. If low frequency or extreme intensity noise is a concern (close proximity of trucks, buses, goods trains or very loud beat music) then we use thicker grades of the optical grade acrylic and price will be around $400 to $450 per square meter.  On the other hand, tinting averages to around $90 per square meter applied onto glass. For bigger jobs where efficiency is gained through scale we also apply volume discounts or provide an interest free payment option.
